Episode 224: Alien RPG Cinematic Starter Review

Our in-depth review of the Alien RPG Cinematic Starter by Free League. More than 90 minutes of overview, analysis and some spoilers for the free PDF adventure, Chariot of the Gods. We start with a summary of the Year Zero System used in the game and how it differs from previous Free League releases like Forbidden Lands and Mechatron. There are also the stress, consumables and PVP mechanics that are unique to this system and setting. We discuss the use of props and sound effects and their effect on the sessions. We played through the adventure in 4 game sessions that are available on our YouTube and Twitch channels.

If you are curious about the Alien RPG and its system and setting this should give you a very thorough idea of how this game plays and if you want to bring it to your gaming table.

Video: Actual Play: Alien RPG Cinematic Starter Kit “Chariot of the Gods” Part 3

The third, but not final session, of the Cinematic Starter for the Free League Alien RPG available for download with all pre-orders of the game. Cinematic adventures are one-shot scenarios with pre-generated characters that replicate the tension and high body count of the Alien movies.

After restoring the reactor and repairing the engines the Cronus is now up a running and auto-pilot takes over. Thank you, special order 966. We are down one player this session so Cham will be an NPC for now.

Our only complaint about the PDF is that it is not very printer-friendly being mostly light text on a black background. So we created a printer-friendly version of the character sheet and a player reference to help anyone interested in trying this adventure.

Idle Red Hands Weekly 012

We discuss the ubiquity and popularity of Dungeons and Dragons for better or worse. Playing the Cinematic Starter for the Free League Alien RPG and the release of the adaption of the unproduced William Gibson Alien 3 screenplay to both a Dark Horse comics series and an Audible audio drama for inspiration. A free alternative to Adobe Creative Suite monopoly. Is the tabletop roleplaying hobby suffering from the McDonald’s effect? #alienrpg #frialigan #alien

Episode 158: Transhumanism

A chimpanzee, dolphin and octopus walk into a bar. The bartender takes their order.

In this episode, we discuss transhumanism and posthumanism. We consider whether or not to explore what it means to be human (i.e., whether to outnavel-gaze a WoD player or whether to just have fun) and what kind of world to play in (“We have both kinds of topia: dys and u.”).

Episode 46: Campaign Confessions: Savaged Worlds Part 2

It was to be a story for the ages. Its heroes dwarfed The Iliad‘s. Its pathos rivaled Oedipus Rex. It had more earth-threatening disasters than a Roland Emmerich film. And it lasted three sessions.

In this episode, we discuss The Marius Chronicles and its premature demise. We talk about party design, “yes” GMs, “no” GMs, and the dangers of elevator pitching a game.

Episode 29: It’s About Time!

In this episode, we discuss time travel and what makes for a good time travel story. We have a mechanic suggestion that can be used in any time travel game and with any system. It’s quite possibly the greatest time travel RPG idea of all time.

We apologize for the sound quality. We messed up the microphone setting, so Wayne and Lyal sound a bit distant. We’ve figured out the problem, so it won’t be problem in future episodes. If only we could go back in time and put it to the correct setting before recording this episode.

Correction: The Adam Sandler movie Chris talks about is called Click, not The Remote. And this is the host you can hear clearly.
